Fostering with Saving Shepherds Rescue

Fostering is how we save our dogs that we bring into the SSR Nation. The rescue provides each foster with food, medicine, toys, treats, leash, and anything else that may be needed. The more foster homes we have, the more dogs we can save!

How does fostering work?

The first step is to fill out an application. SSR members will review and when approved, you’ll be added to the foster group. This is where incoming dogs will be posted and you’ll have the chance to help save a life! Some fosters have other pets in their home that get along with a particular age or gender, we always work with the foster to make the match fit.

Once committed to a specific dog to foster, you’ll be added to a group chat and all details of transport will be shared (pictures below). Most transports will be in Grove City, PA on a Friday or Saturday, but depending on weather or traffic, it can fluctuate.

The transport crew will get our pups out and we’ll let them stretch their legs, go to the bathroom, and just relax for a bit. They’ll get microchipped at transport, adoption bags (with food, toys, treats, blanket, and any applicable medicine) will be handed out, and you’ll take your new foster home.

By PA law, we are required to keep dogs in quarantine for 14 days. During this time, they will be posted for adoption and we’ll ask you to take as many pictures as you can, so we can share their personalities. The SSR team will review applications and when a match is made, we’ll have fosters schedule a meet and greet with the potential adopter. This can be at a neutral location or your house, wherever you feel comfortable. If all goes well at the meet and greet, your foster may leave that day or at a future day, and we’ll get you a new foster!

To help you decide to foster, we wanted to give an inside look at fostering with Saving Shepherds Rescue.

Perhaps you have never fostered, don’t think you can give them up, or are concerned with existing animals or kids getting along with the foster.

We’ve asked our fosters to share why they foster and any tips/tricks/reminders they have. Enjoy!

All fosters must submit a foster application either online or via email. Copies can be downloaded in Word or PDF and emailed to us at savingshepherdsrescue@yahoo.com.

The foster team will reach out to you once the application is received - thank you for taking the jump!
